According to Deadline, the Death Becomes Her diva portrays ‘the authoritarian charged with keeping order in a society that seems utopian.’

The Giver is based on Lois Lowry’s 1993 children’s novel about a society which has ‘gone to great – and sinister – extremes to make everything equal and peaceful.’

The sci-fi drama – coming out August 15 – also stars Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard, and country starlet Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift will co-star in long-awaited adaptation of ‘The Giver’

After more than 15 years of developmen hellt, a film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Newbery-winning 1993 novel The Giver will finally begin production next month — with singer Taylor Swift in one of its supporting roles.

The Weinstein Company announced Swift’s casting today in a release that also names the rest of the film’s principals, many of whom have been attached to The Giver for months. They include Australian actor Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, a boy living in a colorless dystopian world; Jeff Bridges as The Giver, Jonas’s mentor (as well as one of the film’s producers); Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder of Jonas’s community; Katie Holmes as Jonas’s mother; Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas’s father; Cameron Monaghan as Jonas’s best friend Asher; and Odeye Rush as Jonas’s friend and love interest Fiona.

TWC tells EW that Swift will play Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas.

Salt helmer Phil Noyce will direct the film, with a screenplay by The Current War scribe Michael Mitnick. Production begins Oct. 7 in Cape Town, South Africa. Its release date has been set for August 15, 2014.

Katie Holmes joins Meryl Streep in ‘The Giver’

Katie Holmes has closed a deal to join Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in The Giver, a drama from The Weinstein Co. and Walden Media that’s being directed by Phillip Noyce.

Thwaites plays a young boy who is selected for his life service as the Receiver of Memories and works with The Giver (Bridges), an old man who teaches the boy to use his unique gifts of the senses. Streep is the society’s Chief Elder, an authoritative and antagonistic woman who assigns the young their tasks.

Holmes will play Thwaites’ mother, a strict obeyer of the laws that govern what is described as an antiseptic society.

The movie, which is eyeing a budget of around $25 million, is being produced by Nikki Silver of Tonik Productions along with Neil Koenigsberg and Bridges.

Michael Mitnick wrote the most recent script adapting the Lois Lowry YA novel.

A shoot in South Africa is being planned, although it is likely that Steep will shoot her scenes in England, where she is filming Disney’s Into the Woods.

Holmes is repped by ICM Partners, John Carrabino Management and Sloane Offer.
