Start with one part “Grey’s Anatomy,” add a dash of “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Mean Girls” and you have the newest show on 3TV’s sister station CW6 – “Emily Owens, M.D.”
Mamie Gummer (“The Ward,” “Evening,” “Stop-Loss” and “The Hoax”) stars as Emily Owens, a newly minutes doctor embarking on an internship after Denver Memorial Hospital along with her med-school crush Will Rider, played by Justin Hartley (“Smallville,” “MegaFault” and “Scorpio Men on Prozac”).
Eager to put her high-school days behind her, Emily learns the hard way that high school and the hospital are not all that different and the cliques persist — the jocks have become orthopedic surgeons, the mean girls are in plastics, and the rebels are in the ER.
Not only are the clique intact, old rivalries flare up in the grown-up world, too, as Emily and her high-school nemesis compete to impress a world-renowned surgeon who has been an inspiration to them both.
“Even with the long hours, the heavy workload, and no shortage of personal drama filling her first days as an intern, Emily still feels like she’s the new geeky kid all over again, and it’s just as awkward as high school,” reads the show’s website.
Gummer, who is Meryl Streep’s daughter, and Hartley gave 3TV’s Stella Inger the lowdown on the eve of the show’s premiere.
“The dynamic between [Emily and Will} is well-written. It’s a pleasure to play,” Hartley said.
“It’s not literally so much like high school,” Gummer said. “It’s a hospital.”
“It’s real relationship stuff, real friend stuff, real adult stuff,” Hartley agreed. “You know how it is when you’re an adult in whatever job that you have.”
The show’s tagline – “Practicing medicine. Working on life.” – pretty well sums it up.
This is Gummer’s second turn as a doctor. She played Dr. Mina Minard in 2011’s “Off the Map“.
Hartley might be best known for his role as millionaire playboy Oliver Queen and his superhero alter ego Green Arrow on “Smallville“.
Catch “Emily Owens, M.D.” Tuesdays after “Hart of Dixie” on CW6.
